ABSTRACT

This chapter introduces the concept of cash transfer (CT) programmes, which are interventions that provide cash to vulnerable households based on specific criteria. While initially intended as safety nets, CT programmes now have a wider scope and are used to build assets, protect against shocks and improve economic vulnerability. This chapter covers the steps involved in designing and implementing a CT programme, including conducting feasibility studies, building design proposals and making implementation strategy. Policymakers, governmental bodies, and donor agencies can use this chapter as a guide to enact precise and detailed policy decisions regarding CT programmes. This chapter further explains cash transfer as an approach of social protection following the background of the first chapter.
