ABSTRACT

The United States Constitution was drafted by principled men who aspired to form “a more perfect union,” in which the individual pursuits of free men triumphed over the collective power of government. The Founders recognized the intuitive, almost instinctual, human craving for liberty that is driven by the power of the human spirit, the promise of free will, the preservation of self-autonomy, and the primacy of the people. The Founders’ vision for American democracy embodied equality, not elitism, championed fairness, not favoritism, and emphasized autonomy, not aristocracy.
