ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book introduces the case study of the Red culture campaign by offering a brief account of the 'Chongqing Model', of which the Red culture campaign was a crucial component. It presents a theoretical framework adopts to help the readers comprehend the case of Chongqing's Red culture campaign at the conceptual level. The book argues that Chongqing's Red culture campaign exhibited critical features of simulation, which conditions the disassociative element of the interaction between the political programme of the Red culture campaign and its participants. It points out the problematics of applying the concept of simulation and explains where simulation falls short of fully accounting for the whole of the Red culture campaign. The book summarises the findings and implications of this research project, and discuss how these can contribute to a deeper understanding of the Chinese society and China's politics.
