ABSTRACT

This chapter offers a detailed account of the generational differences in terms of socio-economic status, life stage, and values among the three social groups. It describes the mobilisation of such a large and diverse population of participants also depended on the specific institutional conditions in China. A total of 74 participants in the Red culture campaign were interviewed for this research project. The retirees consisted of members of community art groups, that is, choir and dancing groups, and those who voluntarily formed singing groups in public parks and squares. Generation was a critical factor that affected how the different social groups attached values and meanings to, and ultimately made a judgment about, both their own experiences of the Red culture campaign and the campaign as a broader political project. The Residents' Committee was a very important factor that played an intermediary role in mobilising the retirees to participate in the campaign.
