ABSTRACT
The second area of work in the slave states made possible by the Civil War was South Carolina. During the winter of 1861 aid in the form of books and school materials was given to a Methodist army chaplain, the Rev. Dr. Strickland, stationed in the Sea Islands, and a group of soldiers, plus one black man, who were teaching the people there to read.
