ABSTRACT
F a r beyond the continual reactions of these two counterbalancing forces of Hinduism and Islam in modern India, the tragedy of Abyssinia, so ruthlessly carried out by weapons of unheard of cruelty, has given a moral shock to the whole East from which it will take long to recover. This fact has come up again and again in the course of this book. It could not be otherwise. For it has profoundly disturbed men’s minds. It will be necessary to dwell on it now at greater length and to show some of its worst reactions.
