ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book provides an overview of Japanese adult videos (AVs), and explores some of the major characteristics. It shows how the saviour ideology serves as the model of and model for the production of Japanese AVs, which in turn explains why the saviour ideology is ubiquitous in modern Japanese AVs. The book focuses on the major players in the AV industry including AV studios, self-regulatory inspection bodies, distributors, and rental shop owners. It explores how the positions that AV studios have taken, as a result of their unique traditions and background, inform their corporate behaviours, including style of production, size of budget, as well as the extent of the transparency of the mosaic. The book provides a detailed ethnography of the new regulatory body, Eizorin, created upon the collapse of Biderin.
