ABSTRACT

This conclusion presents some closing thoughts on the concepts covered in the preceding chapters of this book. The book explores adult video (AV) inspection by self-regulatory bodies in the Japanese AV industry. It argues that the form and character of AV inspection and the impact thereof are the result of interaction among all the players in the game including AV makers, AV wholesalers, AV rental and retail shops, consumers, and state. The book explores the important role played by the state in shaping and reshaping AV inspection by self-regulatory regimes. It examines how the AV industry in the 1980s was dominated by the major AV studios, which tended to specialise in mainstream videos, especially tantai AVs. The book analyses the changes in the regulation of AVs after World War II as a function of intense negotiations among the players involved , although the possibility that AV makers and sellers will fall prey to state prosecution for violating obscenity laws remains.
