ABSTRACT

At the dawn of the new millennium the Portuguese far right is livened up by a new wave of mobilization not only in terms of parties with the foundation of the Partido Nacional Renovador (Renewal National Party – PNR) but also in terms of movements with the emergence of several youth organizations like the Frente National (National Front – FN), the Causa Identitária (Identitarian Cause – CI), the Terra e Povo (the Portuguese branch of the French Terre et Peuple). Those movements introduce in Portugal the most recent ideas and practices of the European extreme right. In terms of ideas, the main source of inspiration for the youngest generation of Portuguese militants is the French identitarian movement, mostly the Bloc Identitaire. In terms of practices, the Italian Casa Pound inspires the Portuguese radical youth tanks to the new attractive aestheticism, the massive use of the Internet and innovative forms of mobilization for the right-wing radicalism like public building squatting. The relationship between the party and the groups is thick but also characterized by a high degree of competition among the leading figures coming from 1980s and 1990s of the 20th century which explains the still current incapacity of the Portuguese extreme right to consolidate its presence.
