ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book offers an initial literature review with regard to contextual issues relating to the suicide of those who work within the police service. It returns to the research of others and offers an in-depth examination of suicide precipitators; that is, the precipitators that relate to society in general and those that relate to officers and staff. The book then offers a comparative examination of the precipitators identified by the primary research and the research of others. It examines suicide-preventative measures that may be currently in place within the police service and also offers examples of additional measures to be considered where safeguards may be lacking or fall short of what is required. The book concerns intervention procedures and safeguarding measures that might be introduced or enhanced.
