ABSTRACT

This conclusion presents some closing thoughts on the key concepts discussed in the preceding chapters of this book. The book presents an examination of UK research relating to the suicide of those employed in the UK police service revealed an absence of information of any substance. It offers a large number of recommendations that refer to future research projects. The recommendations refer to research/analysis, force working practices, training, welfare, personal initiatives and initiatives on the part of family and friends. The research would have also been enhanced by detailed statistics on police suicides. Reflecting on the research undertaken, there were two particular areas that came to be of interest, but which were outside the remit of the research and were therefore omitted from the study. The first was the role of the medical practitioner and the police chaplain. The second is a consideration of how the families of officers and staff who have taken their own lives might move forward.
