ABSTRACT

Educational selection is done according to educational criteria and is undertaken solely for the purpose of advancing the goals of the education process. Occupational and social selection refers to the sorting and distribution of individuals between various occupations in the economic hierarchy and between various statuses in the social hierarchy, as a result of performance in the education system. The selection debate usually centers around two focal points: firstly, the question of streaming; this has to do with the internal organization of the school and the distribution and classification of children within it. Secondly, the problem of comprehensive or selective secondary schooling; this has to do with the organization of secondary education and the distribution and classification of children into different kinds of school within a given area. Attitudes towards educational selection in general are important in understanding assertions concerning the structure and organization of the school system.
