Few pre-Revolutionary Russian historians were entirely negative in their evaluation of Shamil. The bravery and colourfulness of the Caucasian mountaineers have always appealed to Russians. There
is much similarity between the treatment of native Caucasian resistance by nineteenth-century Russian authors and the attitude displayed towards the American Indians by writers in the United States.2
