ABSTRACT

Purposeful steps are required not only to create a globally oriented workforce, but also to fold in the knowledge and experiences derived from global and virtual work interactions, issues, and accomplishments into the firm's day-to-day operations. This chapter focuses on those who work as employees for corporate organizations. Many businesses today are becoming increasingly interested in recruiting new employees who have international or cross-cultural experience on their resumes. Global virtual teams have grown largely because many work-related interactions can be accomplished through the use of ICTs. Firms have a longstanding practice of sending employees abroad to work as they expand their horizons. International assignments are distinguished initially in terms of their length and subsequently, by a variety of other factors including adjustment to the overseas environment, extent and depth of interaction with host country nationals, and whether family members accompany the employee.
