ABSTRACT
In Chapter 5 it was shown that not all correction officers view their authority in a simple legalistic fashion. Many experience authority as the result of an interaction process in which the ability to gain compliance derives from the “personal legit imacy” of one’s claims to authority. For purposes of the analysis presented here, each officer was placed into one of two groups according to his perceived source of authority: “personal” or “legalistic.”
