ABSTRACT

But what about prison guards? How do they experience their work and work environment? How do they cope with its pressures? Where do they find satisfac tion? To date, there have been no answers to these questions; indeed, the ques tions have rarely been asked. Consequently, guards have had few opportunities to express themselves on the personal meaning of guarding prisoners as an occupa tion and of the prison as a workplace. When guards react publicly it is usually during times of prison crisis. Thus accounts of prison riots often cite unrest among the custodial staff among the conditions existing prior to riots.
