ABSTRACT
This introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book intends to offer the most extensive intellectual biography of Henri Bergson available in English. It offers a guide to and an extended study of the major themes of Bergson’s philosophy as a whole. The book treats different themes in his philosophy in the order in which they arrive as explicit topics in his path of thinking. It attempts to grasp his thinking in its development, to catch his train of thought, as a philosophy that is not only concerned with process and movement but that is a process and movement, right until the end. The book guides the reader through Bergson’s major works, but in so doing it aims to shed new light on his ideas against the background of the history of modern philosophy in general and nineteenth-century French philosophy in particular.
