ABSTRACT

In this chapter we argue that ambiguity and uncertainty are positive conditions that lie at the heart of art and design education for students and tutors. The centrality of ambiguity has implications for our approaches to curriculum, pedagogy and assessment. The position of the discipline in the academy, with higher education’s dominant discourse of transparency threatens the creative potential of art and design pedagogy. Countering this we argue that ambiguity is a prerequisite for creativity and a creative pedagogy in higher education. To thrive in uncertain and unknown futures, our students require resilience and an ability to manage ambiguity and uncertainty.
