ABSTRACT

The audience for any academic writing is a group of the well-informed peers. The prospect of submitting an article about the research be very daunting, for one often believe that the topic is neither significant nor original. Selecting the right journal for their paper requires careful thought and an informed reading of likely journals. Resist the temptation to submit the first paper to a major international or national journal. Multi-authored articles or letters to Nature or Science are all very prestigious and research institutions love them, but an article written by alone is far more career enhancing, and personally satisfying, than merely being a name in a long string of authors. Peer-reviewed papers have become the equivalent of sacrifices to the academic gods. Peer review at its best be a healthy exercise, provided that the editor chooses conscientious reviewers. The old rule applies in archaeology. Keep references to an efficient minimum.
