ABSTRACT

In this article in The Century magazine, Du Bois provides a history of the charismatic Jamaican political leader Marcus Garvey (1887–1940) and his efforts to establish a “back-to-Africa” movement of Caribbean and American blacks to seize power in Africa and free it from colonial rule. He presents a remarkably balanced and insightful analysis of Garvey and of racial politics in Jamaica and the limitations of Garvey’s model of Black Nationalism.
