ABSTRACT
Du Bois wrote several works on Africa, or which emphasized African themes. These included The Negro (1915), Black Folks Then and Now (1939), and The World and Africa (1947). Less well-known are two pamphlets which he published with the socialist publisher E. Haldeman-Julius as part of his famous Haldeman Little Blue Book Series. Sold for five cents each, the Series represents an important effort in terms of popular education to distribute political tracts, practical advice, and classics in literature and history. Typically sold in small shops and stores, the Series eventually produced several thousand separate publications. Du Bois’s Africa: Its Geography People and Productions (No. 1505) and Africa—Its Place in Modern History (No. 1552) were sixty-four pages each and would fit easily into a shirt pocket.
