ABSTRACT

Chichen Itza, which means, according to some translations, “at the mouth of the well of Itza,” is one of the most famous Mayan tourist sites in the Yucatan peninsula in Mexico. The giant Pyramid of Kukulkan or El Castillo, a temple and pyramid devoted to the Mayan god Kukulkan, is the central attraction of the site, which also features a Temple of the Warriors, a Temple of the Jaguar, a Great Ball court, a Cenote of Sacrifice, a nunnery complex, and an astrological observatory, El Caracol. In other words, Chichen Itza is a large site with many buildings. When I visited Chichen Itza, it was possible to climb to the tops of the Great Pyramid and the Temple of the Warriors, but since January 2006, this is no long possible.
