ABSTRACT

Angkor Wat is the most important tourist site in Cambodia and the reason that Siem Reap, which is where most tourists visiting Angkor Wat stay, is full of huge hotels. As you drive on the road from the airport to the center of the city, you see row after row of large hotels, on either side of the road. Siem Reap is booming, though researchers into the impact of tourism in Siem Reap point out that most of the inhabitants there are not benefitting from the increase in tourism and are, actually, suffering, since prices of things have increased and most of the tourism dollars are not employed to better their lives. It is, like many of the tourist sites discussed in this book, a UNESCO World Heritage site.
