ABSTRACT

On its website, UNESCO showcases a short film about Djenné entitled Enchanting Town of Mud. As the camera winds down narrow streets, the narrator talks about Djenné's architecture and declares that “a unique way of life still exists in Djenné today.” 1 Whereas previously UNESCO did not think of its work in Africa as development work, a change of mood has taken place within the organisation, as was witnessed through the institution's 2010 resolution on Culture and Development calling for sustainable development through the promotion of cultural capital.
