ABSTRACT

The Festival du Djennry held in February 2005 presented itself as an opportunity to work with a small group of people on the preparation and execution of a cultural festival in Djenn. The organisation of the Festival du Djennry began in December 2004, when a few people got together with the intention of holding the event the following February. In contrast to the Festival du Djennry, the Festival sur le Niger in 2005 had taken a year of careful planning. A banner had been made declaring the opening of the Festival du Djennry 2005. The opening ceremony was a mix of politics and the celebration of Djenn's cultural heritage. The Soires Culturelles were held in the Maison des Jeunes, a venue traditionally used for plays, musical events, and talent shows in Djenn. The festival committee spent 500,000 CFA on turning old Office des Produits Agricoles du Mali (OPAM) building in Djenn temporarily into la Salle des Expositions, the exhibition hall.
