ABSTRACT

Richard Brautigan has Magic Child transform out of her racial identity by changing clothes and walking around a kitchen with her twin sister the person a of "Magic Child" turns out to have been just a prank played by the Hawkline monster. A few years into the 1970s Brautigan published a novel called The Hawkline Monster: A Gothic Western. A woman temporarily imagines that she's an Indian named Magic Child, and she hires two hit men to deal with a horrid light that lives in a jar of chemicals. The hit men eventually defeat the monstrous light they are aided in this endeavor by a pleasant little shadow that hovers around the jar of evil chemicals. But before this battle, Brautigan has Magic Child suddenly awaken from her delusion of racial identity, which turns out to have been a spell laid upon her by the Hawkline monster.
