ABSTRACT

The location of artifacts from the excavated dolmens and passage graves included in this guide are noted at the end of the descriptions. The vast majority of the material is kept in Statens Historiska Museum, Stockholm and Lunds Universitets Historiska Museum, Lund. In both cases the material on display is only a tiny fraction of that actually recovered from the excavations. Small collections are also housed in other local museums. Here I present a few brief descriptions of displays of Neolithic material in museums, selecting a representative sample of different types from the very largest collections to the smallest. It is important to recognise that permanent exhibitions tend to reflect the nature of archaeological thinking at the time when they were set up rather than current debates and interests. In this sense all museum displays preserve and exhibit not only artifacts but also past thoughts about them that were previously dominant in the discipline of archaeology.
