ABSTRACT

Bohuslän, with its extensive off-shore archipelago of rocky islands, narrow valleys, long sinuous inlets of the sea and forests, is an area of Sweden with outstanding natural beauty. Rounded granite rock surfaces, smoothed by the great ice sheets, are apparent everywhere. The traditional industries here have been fishing, farming and forestry. During the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries herring fishing, in particular, formed a mainstay of the local economy. Light industries and tourism are now very important and there is a wealth of attractive fishing villages with tightly packed houses by the cliffs along the coasts.
