ABSTRACT

The field-based laboratory does not immediately lend itself to traditional evaluation instruments like tests and expository essays. There may be a final report for certain kinds of fieldwork. However, the report cannot do the entire job of evaluating the student’s work. It is never the case that a student receives credit merely for showing up for the requisite number of hours. It is not how much time the student spends, but whether the understanding of the situation has changed because of that time. It is this change in understanding that the student attempts to narrate in some form for evaluation.
