ABSTRACT
But I am not aiming to deliver another history of archaeology based on such broad themes; my account will involve far more than holding that archaeology begins with antiquarian interests in collection and antiquities. Let me take us back to the borders between England and Scotland, between the Rivers Tyne and Tweed in Northumberland, north of Hadrian’s Wall, a land of Scottish Enlightenment and English Industrial Revolution. In this chapter I am going to set the scene for the ramble of scenarios at the heart of this essay.
