ABSTRACT

The aim of t h i s chapter i s t o describe how the survey i n the Acconia area was conducted and also t o present some of i t s main r e s u l t s . As mentioned i n the f i r s t chapter, the immediate goal i n the f i e l d was t o l o c a t e i n a comprehensive manner n e o l i t h i c s i t e s on the landscape and t o determine the composition and s p a t i a l d i s ­ t r i b u t i o n of the remains o c c u r r i n g on the surface of each s i t e . There was the long range goal of using the pa t t e r n s observed t o make inferences about such t h i n g s as the p r e f e r r e d l o c a t i o n s of s i t e s w i t h respect t o the environment and the dens i t y of occupation i n the area. I t was r e a l i s e d t h a t such questions are ambitious ones and t h a t only p a r t i a l answers might be obtained from survey i n f o r m a t i o n alone. But at l e a s t a s t a r t would be made at the systematic study of n e o l i t h i c settlement p a t t e r n s i n C a l a b r i a . The chapter i s d i v i d e d i n t o three p a r t s . The f i r s t s e c t i o n deals w i t h the s t r a t e g y of survey coverage adopted and the methods used f o r r e c o r d i n g i n f o r ­ mation on a s i t e . The second s e c t i o n summarises the work t h a t was a c t u a l l y done i n the f i e l d over the course of four seasons. The t h i r d s e c t i o n i nvolves the present­ a t i o n of a s e r i e s of maps showing the d i s t r i b u t i o n of s i t e s i n the Acconia area.
