ABSTRACT

This chapter on n e o l i t h i c p o t t e r y from the Acconia area i s p r i m a r i l y d e s c r i p - t i v e i n i t s aim. 1 I n terms of our c u r r e n t s t a t e of knowledge, there i s a fundament a l need t o document the ceramic m a t e r i a l t h a t has been recovered from n e o l i t h i c s i t e s i n d i f f e r e n t areas of C a l a b r i a . I t r e a d i l y became apparent i n working on the Acconia p o t t e r y t h a t much of i t e x h i b i t s close t i e s w i t h two ceramic t r a d i t i o n s the S t e n t i n e l l o and the Diana - known i n adjacent regions of southern I t a l y . The f i r s t s e c t i o n of t h i s chapter i s concerned w i t h S t e n t i n e l l o or impressed ware neol i t h i c p o t t e r y which was found at seventeen s i t e s d u r i n g the Acconia Survev Tn c h r o n o l o g i c a l terms, t h i s m a t e r i a l appears t o cover much of the f i r s t h a l f of the n e o l i t h i c sequence i n the Acconia area.2 The second s e c t i o n deals w i t h Diana or l a t e n e o l i t h i c p o t t e r y which was recovered from t h i r t e e n s i t e s d u r i n g the Acconia Survey. I n a f i n a l s e c t i o n , there i s a b r i e f discussion of some aspects of the chronology of the Acconia p o t t e r y and the r e l a t i o n s h i p s between the survey m a t e r i a l and n e o l i t h i c p o t t e r y observed i n other p a r t s of C a l a b r i a and southern I t a l y .
