ABSTRACT

This chapter defines a report as a formal account that deals with the activities, proceedings, and conclusions of an individual or members of a group who have been charged with investigating a topic of interest and importance. Reports are meant to be objective, authoritative accounts of an investigation by the individual or group issuing the report, generally with a standard organization. In the material that follows, the chapter lists the basic elements of reports and discuss in some detail how to write them. The organization of a report may vary but most of the elements described below are included. Basic Elements Found in Academic Reports are: Memo or letter of transmission; Cover; Title page; Preface or introduction; Table of contents; List of tables and illustrations; Acknowledgments; Executive summary; The body of the report; Recommendations; Appendixes; Bibliography and references. The chapter offers a sample report that contains many of the important report elements but in a concentrated or condensed version.
