ABSTRACT

After I assigned numbers to the squares in my grid, I wrote the number of each square on a separate piece of paper. To choose the random sample, we made a ceremony of drawing the slips of paper out of a prehistoric pot which Hwang-ok had pieced together over several evenings. Each member of the crew in turn drew out a numbered slip, until we had the numbers of eight two-meter squares. The test squares selected chanced to fall into one group of three squares and one of four, with the final square off by itself. I decided to excavate them in clusters, and began with the group of four squares nearest to Locality A, where Ki-dok was excavating.
