ABSTRACT

This chapter provides a new and up-to-date list of finds of Roman coins in India. It presents a general view of the information about the Roman trade with India which can be gleaned from the finds. The import of Roman silver and gold: detailed study of the hoards as they are at present known shows that they are very complex, and that it is very difficult to generalise about them. The Roman coin finds do not shed any light on the relationship between the Romans and the Kushans in the far north of India; Imperial coin finds in their territories are rare, and the few Republican denarii are not sufficiently common for us to speculate about them. More finds like the Pakli hoard, or more details from the Kohat find, may yield further information.
