ABSTRACT

This chapter examines equipment planning options and covers recording equipment accessories and other equipment suggestions. Oral history is technology based, and equipment decisions are a central part of the planning process. Audio recorders recommended for oral history use are solid-state with the capability of recording on a removable memory card. The recorders are easy to use, the data files are comparatively small, and they record in non-proprietary cross-platform uncompressed formats that are relatively easy to manage for long-term storage. The most common are solid state recorders, which record in high quality sound on removable, reusable compact flash (CF) or secure digital (SD) memory cards. The most common video recorders used by oral historian's record high definition (HD) onto either an internal hard drive or removable, reusable memory cards. Microphones are another important part of the oral history equipment package.
