Democracy was reestablished in Peru after the Fujimori regime fell in 2000. Valentín Paniagua headed the transitional government, and Alejandro Toledo won the new elections, continuing most of Fujimori’s neoliberal policies while at the same time creating a more open government and getting rid of the former president’s lackeys.
