ABSTRACT

This conclusion presents some closing thoughts on key concepts discussed in the preceding chapters of this book. The book presents numerous case studies of participatory visual research practitioners who are taking advantage of digital technologies to highlight common themes across their projects. Common issues related to community engagement in participatory action research (PAR) include establishing ethical practices, negotiating the terms of participation and collaboration, and developing projects and research products that are useful and accountable to the communities involved. Participatory visual approaches encourage people to coproduce varied research products with and for the participants. Researchers who choose to work with participatory visual methods often comment on the challenges of getting academic institutions, as well as funders, to understand, support, and reward community-based research. Participatory visual and digital methods contribute to building public-engaged ethnography, a critically applied social science that seeks to reach policymakers and the broader public in the twenty-first century.
