ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses four "ethical moments" in participatory visual and digital research. First, the decision to take the participatory action research (PAR) path, which positions participation itself as a research ethic rooted in dialog. Second, the development of a research plan that reconciles scholarly goals and formal norms of institutional ethics with collaborators' goals and PAR ethical norms of collaboration and accountability. Third, the presentation of research findings to scholarly audiences and the public in a way that acknowledges and/or addresses power and the ethics of representation. Fourth, the shared control and ownership of research output, which may include visual materials and policy interventions, as well as scholarly knowledge and plans for further collaboration. Darcy Alexandra's photography, videomaking, and digital storytelling work serves as a case in point for consideration of ethical issues as they may arise when using participatory visual and digital methodologies in research and for advocacy purposes.
