ABSTRACT

Seventy-five percent of survey respondents reported having at least one full-time, year-round employee. However, this was down significantly from the 82% reported in 2009, and just below the 76% of stores in the 2006 study. Full-time seasonal employees were slightly lower than the 10% reported in 2009. The percentage of museum stores reporting at least one part-time, year-round employee was very similar to the results of 2009 at 80% and 81% respectively. Part-time seasonal staff was also a lower percentage at 31% in 2013, compared to 35% in 2009. While there is no way to verify reasons for the declines in employment, much of these differences are likely due to the great recession and resulting decreases in government and state budgets.
