ABSTRACT

Many scholars have defined communication, and though there are differences between the definitions, there is a general theme in them which is that communication involves sending messages of one kind or another to others and receiving messages from others. We communicate in many ways, such as by voice, touch, facial expression, body language, works of art, and words. Communication scholars have also created many models of the communication process, one more complicated than the other. There is some question about the matter of effects, for focusing on effects, as Harold D. Lasswell does, suggests that the basic function of communication is persuasion. Aristotle would agree with Lasswell, but other scholars think such definitions are too limiting. In addition, communication takes place at different levels; from internal thoughts we have about various matters to mass communication, in which there can be audiences of millions of people.
