ABSTRACT

Jade and Carver stayed at Jade Village for a ten-day week. I popped in now and then to be sure that all was well. Since the weather was still pleasant, Carver suggested a side trip to the Heavenly Lake to collect obsidian. Carver and Jade could give nodules of the glossy black stone to the villages who fed and sheltered them on the return trip. This stone is highly prized because it’s easy to flake, and makes a sharper edge than any other kind of rock. It’s also quite rare, occurring only where ancient volcanoes erupted and the lava cooled quickly.
