ABSTRACT

Despite the central importance of chronology to cultural-historical classification, rock art is rarely easy to date, either in a relative or calendrical sense. That said, great headway has been made in rock art dating in the last two decades. While we still have much to resolve about the new chronometric techniques and approaches, there is every reason to be optimistic that rock art dating will become increasingly common, and accurate. Indeed, any large rock art field project should now have a dating component that includes some effort at chronometric dating.
