ABSTRACT

Regardless of an archaeologist’s specific research interest in rock art, analytical rigor is essential. This is true whether the research problem is cultural-historical (e.g., the chronological placement of the site), interpretive (e.g., the identification of the symbolic meaning of the motifs), or overtly scientific (e.g., attempting to explain this aspect of human social life). Our best guide to analytical rigor is always provided by scientific method. Indeed, scientific method provides a model for problem-solving in all areas of our lives. A quick refresher on scientific method and some related topics can be extremely useful because the careful use of scientific method provides our best means for studying rock art.
