ABSTRACT

Oral history is primary source material collected in an interview setting with a witness to or a participant in an event or a way of life and is grounded in context of time and place to give it meaning. Oral history refers to both the process and the final product. Genealogists conducting family research also may conduct interviews with extended family members to fill out the details of their ancestors' lives. Journalists routinely record interviews with people about firsthand experiences, and sometimes such interviews have been carefully researched and structured. Reporters conducting interviews almost always have specific, short-term purposes for using the information in newspaper or online stories or broadcast news or documentary projects. A community is a group of people sharing a sense of identity. The Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC), enrolles constitute a community of memory, a group with a shared sense of identity.
