ABSTRACT

The goals of the civic renewal movement include community building, the creation of social capital, active citizen engagement in community and civic life. Community members find archaeology compelling for what it offers defining and maintaining the identity of the community. Charles Orser offers three possibilities for the more expensive English ceramics in particular: purchase, theft, or gifts. In many cases of working with communities, archaeologists find themselves working with museums as well. Museums have been redefining their social roles over the last few decades and many are deeply involved in civic engagement and renewal. The new museology calls for civic engagement, a commitment far beyond that of public education. Archaeologists, along with their colleagues in museums of all kinds.
