In addition to expecting to be surprised and challenged, it is also important to be prepared to make decisions that may change the course of your ‡eld work, and even the focus of your project. ‚e ability to make (good) decisions in the moment will also depend on good planning. Depending on where and how the project is being conducted it might not be possible for graduate students to contact their supervisor in a timely manner, and they may have to be prepared to make decisions without the bene‡t of the advice of their supervisor. It is important to talk with supervisors, colleagues and other stakeholders before the start of the project to ensure that everyone is on the same page regarding the goals of the project, and to con‡rm that you as the researcher will be

able to exercise your own discretion in the ‡eld to change or alter aspects of the research.
