The submission of the dissertation and the oral defense of our study mark the culmination of the doctoral journey. An important first step is to ask the advisors if they think the work is ready for submission. Before the examination, they read the dissertation and submit an evaluation; then an examination date is set. Doctoral candidates are then usually asked to wait outside the room and let the examiners discuss their performance and the quality of their defense. The purpose of the defense is to give an opportunity to the candidates to have a sound grasp of the whole study. In preparation, the chapter focuses on the study and summarizes it in our own words. It is also useful to have and to demonstrate some knowledge of the literature touching on the area of study, even though we might not have used or referenced it.
