ABSTRACT

Many people with an interest in archaeology got their first exposure to the subject by watching a documentary. Whether that initial documentary was shown in school on 16mm film, Video Home System (VHS) videotape, Digital Versatile Disc (DVD), or was broadcast on television, the documentary genre has brought people to places they most likely would never visit to witness incredible archaeological discoveries and investigations. Regardless of where they saw their first archaeology or anthropology documentary, over the decade's television has been the main venue for most such productions. Therefore, if they plan to produce an archaeology documentary, a brief history of archaeology documentaries on television and the Internet is a good place to begin. An emerging source for viewing archaeology documentaries and other video programming is Internet television (TV). This is where television shows and other productions, including documentaries, are "delivered" to viewers via the Internet, as they choose what they want to view from an archive or directory.
