ABSTRACT
This chapter provides procedural recommendations for the acquisi-tion process for cultural material over 100 years old. An underlying goal of the suggested steps below is to help museum professionals navigate-in a way that protects both staff and the institution-the frequently confusing and politically charged legal landscape described in previous chapters. Risk assessment and mitigation strategies are integrated into the best practices provided for all stages of the acquisition review process. The greater degree of risk a museum is willing to take regarding acquisitions, the greater the need for risk management. Museums must be able to prove that a sufficient amount of research was done to ensure the legality of the acquisition and that the museum acted in good faith.
